Excavations in the rear of the former Veterinary
Faculty have revealed what was, between
the 1st and 4rd centuries AD, the third largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire,
following the Coliseum in Rome and the
amphitheatre in Carthage. Its elliptical form
(with a central axis of 178m) held 30,000
spectators in three tiers of stands, the whole
with a height of between 15 and 20m.
