Portillo Arch

Opposite the arch of the Compas de San Francisco is this Portillo de Corvache, which has miraculously survived the passage of time.

This small gate was opened at the end of the 14th century and its function was to communicate the two parts of the city, the medina and the ajerquía, which were separated by the wall. There are still remains of this wall attached to the buildings on this side of the Calle de San Francisco; some are visible, as in the Ermita de la Aurora; others are not, such as the one that the demolition of the house attached to the portillo has brought to light. The arch of the Portillo is semicircular, without ornamental elements, and widened at the bottom after the reform carried out in 1703 to allow carriages to pass through.

The walker who crosses it and climbs the slight slope to which it leads will enter a unique network of streets in which time seems to have stood still. At night, they are particularly evocative.
